Here are some photos of opticians' show windows that I took in a rush in summer 1999.
I'd never been particularly interested in show windows, spectacles, or opticians; and certainly I'd never been interested in opticians' show windows. But a friend asked me to take the photos, and after some initial incredulity and reluctance I soon became very interested. Certainly German opticians demonstrate a lot of imagination and humor.
Incidentally, most of the good opticians were in the smaller towns. (Forchheim excelled.) By the time I got to Augsburg, I knew what I was looking for -- but seldom found it. And there was almost nothing in Munich, whose opticians seem content to litter their windows with photos of handsome models wearing spectacles having "famous" (international, bland) brands -- the same brands that appear on overpriced perfumes, cigarette lighters, handbags and other junk.
No, the good stuff appears in the small towns. I don't know whether it's the work of the opticians, freelance window-dressers, or optical companies, but anyway it's good.
(Sorry about all the reflections: my camera lacks a polarizing filter.)
Any comments? Corrections? Write to me (Peter Evans), or tell the whole world.
