The Invention of a New Religion was published in 1912. Its author, Basil Hall Chamberlain, lived on until 1935. Therefore, according to my understanding of the copyright laws (via this handy page), although his work is in the public domain both in the United States and in the numerous nations (Australia, Canada, China, Japan, Russia, Taiwan, etc.) that have the "life-plus-fifty-years" rule (and India, where it's "life-plus-sixty"), his work remains copyright in the European Union, Switzerland, Brazil, and perhaps certain other nations, until 2006; and in Mexico till 2011.
